Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, are likely to open on a weak note today, tracking mixed global cues. Market sentiment will be guided by the US Federal Reserve’s 25 bps rate cut, Chair Jerome Powell’s commentary, F&O expiry, and ongoing Q2 earnings.

GIFT Nifty futures were trading 71.2 points lower at 26,167.5, indicating a negative start for the domestic markets.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 84997.13 up by 368.97 points or by 0.44 % and then NSE Nifty was at 26053.9 up by 117.7 points or by 0.45 %.

On the global front, Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Thursday as comments from US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell dampened expectations of another rate cut this year. Powell said a December rate reduction was “far from a foregone conclusion,” even as the Fed, as expected, trimmed the benchmark federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75 per cent-4 per cent.

The Kospi rose 0.94 per cent. Nikkei 225 edged 0.25 per cent lower, and the Topix was up 0.33 per cent. ASX 200 was down 0.2 per cent. Overnight in the US, the Dow Jones slipped 0.2 per cent after briefly touching a record high earlier in the session. The S&P 500 ended marginally lower, while the Nasdaq added 0.55 per cent to close at a new record of 23,958.47, driven by gains in Nvidia.

Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 27381.36 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 129.11 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 17950.28 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 248.34 Crore.
