India and Nepal have taken a major step forward in strengthening their energy cooperation as Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, H.E. Kulman Ghising, met Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, in New Delhi today. The meeting focused on expanding collaboration in the power sector, particularly in hydropower development and cross-border electricity trade.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the progress of ongoing hydropower projects in Nepal and regional grid connectivity initiatives aimed at boosting energy security and facilitating clean energy integration across borders.

In the presence of the two ministers, Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements (JV&SHA) were signed between POWERGRID, a Maharatna CPSE under the Government of India, and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). These agreements pave the way for establishing two joint venture entities — one in India and one in Nepal — to develop high-capacity cross-border transmission infrastructure.

The upcoming projects include the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) transmission link and the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) transmission link. Once completed, these projects will significantly enhance electricity exchange between the two countries, strengthen grid reliability, and support regional economic growth.

The meeting underscored the growing momentum in India–Nepal energy partnership, reflecting both nations’ shared commitment to sustainable development, regional integration, and long-term energy security.
