The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will commence nationwide celebrations on June 9, 2026, to mark the completion of a decade of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), one of the Government of India's flagship maternal healthcare initiatives.
The celebrations, themed “10 Years of PMSMA – A Decade of Care”, will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda. Awareness and outreach activities will be conducted across States and Union Territories to encourage pregnant women and their families to avail the nine assured free services offered under the scheme and highlight the importance of timely and quality antenatal care.
As part of the commemorative events, the Union Health Minister will also release a special Rs 75 commemorative coin and a Rs 5 postal stamp in recognition of the programme’s contribution to safe motherhood and maternal healthcare over the past decade.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9, 2016, PMSMA provides free, comprehensive and quality antenatal care services to pregnant women on the 9th day of every month. Over the last ten years, the initiative has played a significant role in strengthening maternal and neonatal healthcare services across the country.
The scheme forms a key component of the Government’s Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) strategy and focuses on improving the quality, coverage, diagnostics and counselling services related to antenatal care. The programme has benefitted millions of families and contributed to the reduction of India's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) through improved access to healthcare services during pregnancy.
