Indian Railways has approved a Rs 440 crore project to construct a 14.52-km third railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur on the South Eastern Railway, aiming to ease congestion and enhance freight and passenger capacity.
The project is part of the Railways' capacity augmentation plan for high-density routes. The corridor currently operates at 115.71% line capacity utilisation, leading to congestion and operational constraints.
Once completed, the third line is expected to improve operational flexibility, support faster movement of trains, and facilitate an additional freight capacity of 3.52 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
The route is a key freight corridor carrying commodities such as coal, iron ore, steel, fertilisers, cement, petroleum products, food grains and containers, with an existing freight loading of nearly 23.8 MTPA.
Indian Railways said the project will reduce bottlenecks, improve network reliability, and strengthen connectivity for industries while supporting economic growth through enhanced rail infrastructure.
