The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed India's first indigenous expendable turbojet engine in the 350 kg thrust class, marking a significant milestone in the country's aerospace and defence capabilities.

The engine was designed by DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), while Azad Engineering was selected as the industry partner for its manufacturing and assembly. The engine was successfully completed and delivered to GTRE on July 22, 2026.

The development is considered a major achievement, as jet engine technology is among the world's most complex engineering fields and is mastered by only a few countries. DRDO said the successful delivery demonstrates the growing technological and manufacturing capabilities of India's defence industry.

The engine was handed over to Director General (Aeronautical Systems) Dr K. Rajalakshmi Menon and GTRE Director Dr S.V. Ramanamurty by Azad Engineering CEO Rakesh Chopdar.

Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh congratulated GTRE and its industry partner, saying the collaboration has transformed the vision of indigenous jet engine development into a significant milestone for India's defence ecosystem.
